Competitive Program

In class we learned about these 5 competitive program:

Doodle for Google

Rube Goldberg

Future City

First Lego League Jr. and,

Global Cardboard Challenge

Each person in the class chose a program that they wanted to know more about and got to work with the others that also chose the program that you did. I chose the Rube Goldberg Program.

Rube Goldberg, I chose this program because it's the one I know the least about that's also hands on and I know that my students would appreciate this program and engage in it. The past 6 years, I've had to do a lot of observing students to see how they learn and what their favorite ways to learn are so that I can be an effective grade level teacher when I was done being an Instructional Aid and ISS-Supervisor. I observed that a lot of my students love learning science related topics as well as art hands on. I also chose Rube Goldberg because it looks fun and frustrating at the same time and I'm always up for a challenge. As Barney says in How I Met Your Mother, challenge accepted!

In doing the Rube Goldberg program, I learned about Reverse Engineering. There's so much detail in it and it makes you think about how you give and follow precise directions. I learned that even as an adult that working through frustrations with things that are "supposed" to be fun, is still very much so a thing. It took persistence and collaboration for us to get through to the end of the project. It was fun but it was also very frustrating. I loved every part of it.

Doing Rube Goldberg myself also made me see a student perspective on the project. It helped me to understand what I'm asking my students to and understand their frustrations as they arise. Lastly, this also helped me gain an understanding of how to teach students about Rube Goldberg without being so wordy.

In class we also "taught" our classmates about our topics. I put quotes around taught because some of use knew about some of the topic but then we didn't know about others so we shared our finding with the class. Part of "teaching" our program to the class was giving them a "you do" assignment after showing them what we did. So below are the pictures of the book that my team read for our project and my classmates doing the assignment that we gave them. If there's a video link below than how great is it that I figured out how to insert the video.
